How MusicGrabber works

MusicGrabber, maintained by g33kphr33k on GitLab, is a web application that searches connected audio sources and writes files into a folder you mount. The Docker image is g33kphr33k/musicgrabber. State sits in a SQLite file at the path you set, so this baseline does not add PostgreSQL or MariaDB. The compose example publishes a web port and two volumes: the music directory and the data directory. Optional environment variables can notify Navidrome, Jellyfin, or Plex to rescan after a download.

The project documents a larger shared-memory setting for very long playlists that use a headless browser. That is why this baseline is 2 GB rather than a tiny static site. Source formats can be kept or converted, including a FLAC option in the documented environment. MusicBrainz lookup can be enabled. AvaHost does not supply accounts for YouTube, SoundCloud, Spotify, or any other source.

Key MusicGrabber features

The interface is a queue and a history, not a radio station. You point MUSIC_DIR at the folder your existing player already watches. Notifications to chat or mail webhooks are optional and use endpoints you provide. Running as a chosen user id is optional so files match an arr-style stack. None of that creates a licence to the audio.

You are responsible for having the rights to every recording the tool saves. AvaHost does not grant rights to third-party catalogues, and this page does not walk through ripping or account bypasses. Automatic updates and scheduled backups cover the app data and, with the volume, the files stored on the VPS. A large library still outgrows the smallest disk.

MusicGrabber vs Lidarr

1

MusicGrabber

MusicGrabber is aimed at grabbing individual tracks into a folder. Lidarr is aimed at following artists and filling discographies. If your workflow is "watch this artist and fetch the album", Lidarr matches it more closely. If your workflow is a search desk for singles, MusicGrabber is the closer tool.

2

Lidarr

Both can sit beside the same music server. They do not replace each other, and neither one clears copyright in the recordings.

Who uses MusicGrabber

People who already run Navidrome, Jellyfin, or Plex and want a browser queue for extra files use MusicGrabber. It is a poor fit if you need a monitored artist catalogue, or if you cannot store the audio legally. Do not treat the VPS as a way to ignore the terms of the source sites.

Self-hosting MusicGrabber: requirements and cost

The baseline is 2048 MB of RAM and 1 CPU core, image g33kphr33k/musicgrabber, SQLite on disk. Downloaded audio, not the web process, fills disk first: 50 GB on Plan 3 is a practical start, and 100 GB on Plan 4 suits a larger archive. On AvaHost the recommended minimum for MusicGrabber is Plan 2 at €5. The package includes one-click deployment, a hostname, automated HTTPS for the desk, automatic updates, and scheduled backups. Application mail is not included with MusicGrabber. Source-site accounts and any fees they charge stay outside this price.

F.A.Q

  • MusicGrabber starts at €5 on Plan 2. The price covers the web desk and normal app data, not the rights to any recording and not a second music server. Very long playlist jobs that need a headless browser want the memory this plan allows. A growing folder of audio is a disk question, handled by stepping up storage.

  • Yes. Point a hostname at the instance and automated HTTPS protects the browser desk. The music folder itself is not a public website unless you separately publish it through Navidrome or another player. DNS and who may log into the desk stay under your control.

  • AvaHost updates MusicGrabber automatically and keeps the data volume, including the SQLite file, attached to the deployment, with backups on a schedule. Audio files live on the music volume, so confirm that volume is included in the backup scope you rely on. After an update, check one queued item and any rescan webhook you configured.

  • Disk. Saved audio grows faster than the application. Treat 50 GB on Plan 3 as a starting library and 100 GB on Plan 4 when the folder gets deep. You must have rights to the material you save. AvaHost does not provide source-site memberships, and this package does not include a procedure for bypassing paywalls.
