How Navidrome works
Navidrome scans music folders, reads available metadata, and builds a searchable library organised around artists, albums, tracks, playlists, and genres. Users can listen in the responsive web interface or connect a compatible client through the Subsonic and OpenSubsonic APIs. The server keeps play counts, favourites, and playlists associated with each user.
Library monitoring can discover new files and changed metadata after music is added. Multiple libraries and user-specific access controls can separate different collections. On-the-fly transcoding can adapt audio for a player or connection, while direct streaming avoids conversion when the client accepts the stored format.

The application is focused on music rather than video. It handles large catalogues, supports multiple users, and gives each account its own listening activity. Subsonic compatibility opens access to a range of mobile and desktop players instead of limiting listeners to the built-in web interface.
Playlists can be created in the application, and existing playlist files can be imported under supported configurations. Sharing can produce a link for a track, album, artist, or playlist, allowing selected music to be opened without giving the recipient a full account.
Metadata quality strongly affects browsing. Clean artist, album, disc, and track tags make the catalogue easier to navigate, while inconsistent tags can split one release into several entries. Navidrome reads the library; it does not repair every metadata problem automatically.

The platform is not intended for films or general video libraries. Users who need mixed media, extensive television metadata, or video transcoding should choose a broader media server instead of stretching a music-focused application beyond its design.
Self-hosting Navidrome: requirements and cost
Storage is the main limit because the music files remain on the hosted volume. Catalogue scans, concurrent listeners, and audio transcoding add processor work, but a directly streamed audio library is generally lighter than video serving. The mapping marks the database requirement as “Not required”; Navidrome keeps its persistent application data locally.
AvaHost maps Navidrome to Plan 1 at €2, and the software itself is free to run. A small compressed-music library may fit the entry storage, but 50 GB on Plan 3 is a realistic starting point and 100 GB on Plan 4 suits a larger lossless collection. Navidrome starts at €2 on the mapped entry plan. The application itself adds no separate software charge. Music storage is the main cost driver, so a small compressed library may fit initially while a large or lossless collection may need Plan 3 or Plan 4. Concurrent transcoding can also justify more compute.
Add the size of the current music folders and leave room for new albums, application data, artwork, and playlists. Plan 3 provides 50 GB as a practical starting point, while Plan 4 provides 100 GB for a larger collection. Lossless audio consumes far more space than compressed formats, so file size matters more than track count.
A custom domain and automated HTTPS can provide one stable server address for the web player and compatible Subsonic clients. Each client must be updated if that address changes. Users should test sign-in, direct streaming, transcoding, playlists, and any shared links after the final domain is connected.
Navidrome is designed for music and does not implement video functionality in its Subsonic compatibility layer. That focus keeps the interface and library model centred on artists, albums, tracks, and playlists. Choose Jellyfin or another broader media server when the same installation must catalogue films, television, and music together.
