How Monica works
Monica gives each person a contact record that can hold relationships, important dates, notes, conversations, activities, gifts, debts, promises, and other details the user wants to remember. The purpose is not to score leads or push contacts through a sales process. It is a private reference for keeping human context available before the next call, visit, or event.
Contacts can be linked to one another so families, partners, colleagues, or other relationships are represented together. Reminders are created from important dates and follow-up intentions, while journals and activity records preserve a timeline. The usefulness of the system depends on deliberate entry and review because Monica cannot reconstruct a relationship history that was not recorded.
Key Monica features
Contact profiles combine personal details with notes, relationship links, significant dates, conversations, and activity history. Gift, debt, and promise records help remember commitments that would otherwise be spread across messages or paper notes. Tags and grouping support different parts of a personal or professional network.
The interface is designed around private contact memory rather than mass communication. Monica does not replace a shared sales CRM, help desk, or marketing platform when several departments need pipelines, campaign attribution, or complex permission models. It is strongest as a focused personal workspace for one owner or a small trusted circle.
Who uses Monica
People with wide personal networks use Monica to remember birthdays, family connections, and previous conversations. Consultants and community organisers keep context about recurring contacts, while caregivers can record practical details that make future interactions more thoughtful and consistent.
The application contains sensitive relationship information, so account access and the public registration setting deserve attention. The catalogue configuration starts with registration enabled. Create the intended owner account promptly, review who can register, and avoid storing details that are unnecessary or inappropriate for the purpose of the installation.
Self-hosting Monica: requirements and cost
Resource use grows with the number of contacts, notes, activities, attachments, searches, and concurrent users. MariaDB stores the relationship graph, reminders, settings, and contact history. The database container is included but unmanaged, and its memory is not part of the exported Monica application minimum.
AvaHost maps Monica to Plan 3 at €10. Monica hosting includes one-click setup, custom-domain HTTPS, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. Application email is disabled, so emailed reminders and email-based recovery are unavailable; users should rely on the in-app records and maintain a separate route for account administration.
F.A.Q
Monica starts at €10 on Plan 3 after adding capacity for its MariaDB container. The recommendation is intended for a personal or small trusted workspace with a growing contact history. Contact volume, notes, attachments, activity records, search use, and simultaneous users are the main reasons to reassess resources later.
The one-click deployment provisions MariaDB and links Monica to it automatically. Contacts, relationships, dates, reminders, notes, activities, and configuration depend on the database. MariaDB is included but unmanaged, so the database and persistent application data should be treated as one service when evaluating updates, account recovery, exports, or restoration.
A custom domain can be attached to Monica, with automated HTTPS issued after DNS points to the hosted application. Choose the address before inviting another trusted user or saving browser shortcuts. After the change, test sign-in, contact pages, attachments, and any links that may still refer to the temporary hostname.
AvaHost disables application email, so Monica cannot deliver emailed reminders or email-based account recovery from this hosted configuration. Relationship records, dates, activities, notes, and in-app views remain available. Administrators should create the owner account promptly, review registration access, and keep a separate secure method for retaining credentials and recovering operational control.
