How MeTube works
MeTube accepts a supported media URL, passes the request to yt-dlp, and places the resulting files in the configured download directory. Users can choose video or audio options, request captions or thumbnails, and submit playlists or channels where the upstream extractor supports them. The web queue displays active and completed work without requiring each user to operate the downloader directly.
Channel and playlist subscriptions can check periodically for new items and add them to the queue. Compatibility remains tied to yt-dlp and the remote site. Provider changes, regional restrictions, authentication requirements, bot checks, unavailable formats, or removed content can interrupt a download even when MeTube itself is healthy.

The official project supports videos, audio, captions, thumbnails, playlists, channels, configurable output options, and automatic queueing from subscribed sources. A shared web interface makes the process easier to administer for an approved group, while the persistent download directory keeps completed files available to the owner.
Downloading a publicly reachable URL does not establish permission to copy or retain the content. Users must respect copyright, contractual restrictions, privacy, and the remote service’s terms. Authentication cookies or provider accounts, when required, contain sensitive access data and are not supplied by the hosting plan.
Who uses MeTube
Creators can keep authorised copies of their own uploads, researchers can preserve permitted public material, and households can download media for which they have the necessary rights. It can also prepare audio or captions from sources whose rules explicitly permit that use.
MeTube is not a streaming subscription, rights-clearance service, paywall bypass, or assurance that a remote website permits downloading. It should not be used for content the user is not entitled to copy.
Self-hosting MeTube: requirements and cost
Resource use depends on source duration, resolution, selected formats, concurrent downloads, post-processing, subtitles, thumbnails, playlists, and the size of retained files. No separate PostgreSQL or MariaDB service appears in the MeTube catalogue configuration. Completed media accumulates in the download volume, making storage the practical limit rather than a relational database.

Storage is the practical limit: Plan 3 includes 50 GB as a realistic starting point, while Plan 4 provides 100 GB for a larger lawful media archive.
A custom hostname can serve MeTube with automated HTTPS after DNS points to AvaHost. Use the final address before sharing the queue with approved users. Following a domain change, verify page access, job submission, progress updates, completed downloads, browser bookmarks, and any callback or surrounding access policy that may retain the old URL.
MeTube relies on yt-dlp extractors, so support changes as remote sites change. Regional limits, authentication, bot checks, removed media, unavailable formats, and provider updates can cause failures. The hosting plan does not include service accounts or cookies. Test the exact permitted source and format rather than assuming every page will remain compatible.
A public URL does not automatically grant copying rights. Use MeTube only for material you own, created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to download and retain. Users remain responsible for copyright, contractual terms, privacy, and local law. AvaHost provides the application service, not content rights, paywall access, or legal clearance.
