How Fluxer works

Fluxer is a self-hosted chat and voice platform. The operator guide describes a Docker Compose install that serves the web app, API, gateway, admin dashboard, media uploads, and search behind one hostname. The monolith image is ghcr.io/fluxerapp/fluxer-server. Upstream's minimum for that layout is 2 vCPU, 4 GB of RAM, and 20 GB of disk, with 4 vCPU and 8 GB suggested for a small active community. This catalog maps 4 GB to Plan 3. SQLite is the default datastore in the monolith description, with Valkey for cache. This baseline does not add a separate PostgreSQL or MariaDB container.

Text, the admin UI, and the gateway can sit behind HTTPS on ports 80 and 443, or behind a tunnel that only carries HTTP. Voice and video are different. The same guide says production media wants a public path to TCP 7881 and UDP 7882, because browser calls use WebRTC and will not fit through an HTTP-only tunnel. Search can be an optional Meilisearch profile. Those pieces are documented as part of compose, not as a single process you ignore.

Key Fluxer features

Communities get servers and channels, file uploads, and an admin dashboard on the hostname you set. Voice is optional and is the part that dictates firewall rules. The project asks for Docker Engine 24 or newer and a recent Compose plugin because the healthcheck uses keys older plugins reject. Plan capacity for the 4 GB floor first. An 8 GB community is a step up from Plan 3, which this app page cannot show as a higher catalog plan. Say so if that is your expected size.

AvaHost updates the deployment automatically and backs up persistent data on a schedule. Uploaded media dominates disk. Application mail is not included with Fluxer. AvaHost does not operate a public discovery directory of Fluxer communities.

Fluxer vs Discord

1

Fluxer

Fluxer is the software on your VPS. Discord is the operated network, with its own clients, policies, and voice regions. Choose Discord when you want that network. Choose Fluxer when the requirement is to hold messages and files yourself and you can meet the memory floor and, if you need calls, the UDP ports.

2

Discord

Client polish and network effects are not the same. A self-hosted instance is only as populated as the people you invite.

Who uses Fluxer

Groups who want a Discord-like layout without putting history on Discord's servers use Fluxer. It is a poor fit on a 1 GB plan, and it is a poor fit if you need voice but cannot publish UDP. Read the get-started page for the compose file you will actually run, because the stack is more than one container even when the app image is the monolith.

Self-hosting Fluxer: requirements and cost

The baseline is 4096 MB of RAM and 2 CPU cores, image ghcr.io/fluxerapp/fluxer-server, SQLite inside the app. Uploaded media, not chat text, drives disk growth: 50 GB on Plan 3 covers a small community, while 100 GB on Plan 4 fits heavier file sharing. On AvaHost the recommended minimum for Fluxer is Plan 3 at €10. The Fluxer package includes one-click deployment, a hostname, automated HTTPS, automatic updates, and scheduled backups. A dedicated public IP is not required for text. Voice still needs the UDP and TCP ports the guide names.

F.A.Q

  • Fluxer starts at €10 on Plan 3. The operator guide lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum for the monolith, which is this plan, and suggests 8 GB for a busier community. Plan 3 is the 4 GB match. Search, voice, and a pile of uploads can push past it. The price does not include a third-party push or mail provider.

  • Yes. The guide is built around one hostname, and automated HTTPS covers the web app, API, and gateway on that name. Point DNS at the instance before you invite anyone. Voice media does not ride along with that certificate alone. It needs the extra ports reachable from clients.

  • AvaHost updates Fluxer automatically and backs up persistent data on a schedule. Messages are the small part. Uploaded files are the large part, so size the backup for the media volume. After an update, sign in, open a channel, and send a test file. Keep the compose secrets you generated, because the platform cannot recreate a key you did not store.

  • Text can. The operator guide says voice and video need a public path to TCP 7881 and UDP 7882, or a TURN layout, and that an HTTP-only tunnel is not enough for browser media. If you cannot open those ports, plan on text and uploads only. This package does not require a dedicated IP for the text service.
