How Listmonk works

Listmonk stores subscribers in named lists and prepares campaigns for one or more selected audiences. Lists can use single or double opt-in, while reusable templates provide common structure and branding around campaign content. The upstream application also exposes transactional messaging and campaign APIs when a deployment has an enabled delivery channel.

Administrators prepare lists, import or collect subscribers, build templates, and create campaign records in the web interface. Analytics can report views, links, clicks, and bounces when tracking and message delivery are available. Listmonk manages campaign data and workflow, while outbound delivery depends on capabilities enabled by the hosting environment.

Key Listmonk features

Subscriber lists, attributes, and segmentation make it possible to organise different audiences from one installation. Campaigns can use rich text, HTML, Markdown, plain text, or a visual editing mode, while templates keep headers, footers, and common branding consistent.

The platform includes campaign scheduling controls, templates, public archives, reporting, and role-based access. Some tracking methods have privacy implications, so organisations should configure available reporting in line with their consent and compliance requirements.

Listmonk vs Mailchimp

Listmonk runs on infrastructure selected by the organisation and centres on lists, campaigns, templates, analytics, and APIs. Mailchimp is a hosted platform that combines email with SMS, automation, audience tools, landing pages, social advertising, and analytics.

Mailchimp may suit teams seeking guided campaign builders, templates, marketing-automation flows, and a broader managed marketing toolset in one service. Listmonk is attractive when the organisation wants direct control of subscriber and campaign data through a focused self-hosted application.

Who uses Listmonk

Newsletter teams, community projects, product groups, associations, and internal communications departments use Listmonk to organise subscriber data and campaign material. In a configuration without outbound delivery, it remains useful for list administration, segmentation, template preparation, campaign records, and reviewing available reports.

It is not suitable for live campaign or transactional sending on a service where application email delivery is disabled. Teams that require outbound distribution need a different supported delivery arrangement outside this hosted application.

Self-hosting Listmonk: requirements and cost

Subscriber count, campaign volume, imports, reporting queries, and retained analytics shape Listmonk resource use. PostgreSQL stores lists, subscribers, campaigns, templates, and reporting records, so the complete stack needs more headroom than the application-only RAM figure.

AvaHost maps Listmonk to Plan 2 at €5 for the application and PostgreSQL stack. One-click deployment provisions Listmonk and PostgreSQL, but the database remains unmanaged by AvaHost. The Listmonk service includes automatic application updates, scheduled backups, custom-domain support, and automated HTTPS. Campaign and application email delivery are disabled, so the deployment is limited to list, template, campaign, and reporting administration without outbound sending.

F.A.Q

  • Listmonk starts at €5 on Plan 2 for the application and PostgreSQL stack. Its PostgreSQL container is part of the plan but is not managed by AvaHost. The hosted Listmonk package includes automatic application updates, scheduled backups, a custom domain, and automated HTTPS. Campaign and application email delivery are disabled on the hosted service.

  • The one-click deployment provisions PostgreSQL and connects Listmonk automatically. Lists, subscriber records, campaigns, templates, and analytics depend on that database. PostgreSQL is included but remains unmanaged by AvaHost, so administrators should consider application data and database data together when reviewing changes, exports, or recovery requirements.

  • No. Campaign and other application email delivery are disabled on the AvaHost hosted service. The deployment can administer subscriber lists, segments, templates, campaign records, and analytics, but outbound sending is unavailable. Connecting an external SMTP service for hosted delivery is not supported in this configuration.

  • A custom domain and automated HTTPS can provide a branded address for the Listmonk dashboard and any enabled public pages. The final address should be selected before links are distributed. After the domain is attached, administrators should test sign-in, list management, templates, public forms, and reports that refer to the hosted URL.
