How Dufs works

Dufs exposes the hosted /data directory as a file service. Users can browse folders, upload files and directories, download individual items or a folder archive, search paths, create directories, edit supported text files, and resume partial transfers. WebDAV and HTTP operations allow compatible clients or scripts to work with the same directory.

The catalogue creates one admin account with a generated password and read-write access at the root. It also enables the application’s broad file operations. That is a shared administrative credential rather than a multi-user collaboration model. Anyone holding it can alter or delete hosted content, so the password should be stored securely and rotated when exposure is suspected.

Key Dufs features

Dufs supports path-based account rules upstream, but the standard package configures only the generated administrator. Separate read-only users, departmental folders, quotas, expiring links, approval workflows, version history, trash recovery, malware scanning, content classification, and synchronisation clients are not created. Additional access rules would require a separately reviewed configuration change.

The service is storage-driven: file volume, transfer size, concurrent uploads, archive creation, searches, WebDAV clients, and public bandwidth matter more than the small application process. Scheduled backups protect the hosted volume on the platform’s schedule, but Dufs itself is not a backup system and does not prevent a synchronised deletion or authorised overwrite.

Who uses Dufs

Developers can exchange build artefacts, administrators can maintain a controlled utility folder, and small groups can use WebDAV for a shared working set. A password-protected drop is also useful for moving large files when recipients already understand how the shared credential is governed.

Dufs is not a document-management suite, consumer sync platform, immutable archive, data-loss-prevention service, antivirus gateway, secure secret-sharing product, or records system. Sensitive or regulated files require stronger identity, auditing, retention, encryption, and recovery controls than this one-account package provides.

Self-hosting Dufs: requirements and cost

Dufs workload is determined by stored data, simultaneous transfers, archive creation, search activity, file editing, WebDAV clients, and bandwidth. PostgreSQL and MariaDB are Not required; /data is the persistent application volume. The software adds no separate application charge. Dufs is marked storage-driven in the plan mapping, so 50 GB on Plan 3 is a realistic starting point and 100 GB on Plan 4 provides more room for a large working set.

On AvaHost, Dufs uses Plan 1 at €2. The hosted Dufs package includes one-click deployment, a custom domain with automated HTTPS, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. The deployment provides one generated admin read-write account. It does not include separate users, quotas, expiring links, version history, trash, malware scanning, client software, end-to-end encryption, content moderation, or an immutable backup. Treat the password and hosted files as sensitive.
