How DbGate works
DbGate connects to databases that the user already operates and presents their objects through a web interface. Depending on the selected driver, users can browse schemas and collections, edit table data, run SQL, build queries, import or export records, compare structures, and work with several saved connections from one protected installation.
The hosted package sets an administrator login and persists DbGate’s own configuration directory. Saved connection definitions remain on the hosted service, but the target database engine, network path, accounts, permissions, backups, and availability stay outside the package. No PostgreSQL or MariaDB server is created merely by installing DbGate.

DbGate supports a range of SQL and NoSQL systems through built-in and optional drivers. Its tools include data grids, query editors, schema browsing, import and export, visual query functions, JSON views, and connection management. Exact capabilities vary by database driver, server version, permissions, and the edition or plug-ins present in the deployed image.
A database administration interface is sensitive because it can store connection details and execute consequential queries. Use dedicated least-privilege database accounts, restrict network access at the target, protect the DbGate administrator password, remove unused connections, and confirm backups at the database service before running destructive operations.
DbGate vs DataGrip
DbGate provides a self-hosted browser workspace that can be reached without installing a desktop client on every computer. DataGrip is a JetBrains desktop database IDE with intelligent query editing, database navigation, refactoring, version-control integrations, and support for many database systems through a locally installed application.
DataGrip may suit professional database developers who want a mature desktop IDE and the wider JetBrains workflow. DbGate is attractive when a team wants a central web interface, lightweight access from several machines, and control of where its saved connections live. Both products still depend on the permissions and safeguards of the target database.
Who uses DbGate
Engineering teams inspect development databases, support staff review customer records under controlled permissions, analysts run repeatable queries, and administrators perform occasional schema or data tasks from a browser. It is also useful when several database types need to be reached from one internal tool.
DbGate should not become a substitute for database backups, migration review, access governance, monitoring, auditing, or change approval. A convenient interface can make high-impact actions easier to reach, so production credentials and destructive permissions deserve stricter controls than a local development database.
Self-hosting DbGate: requirements and cost
DbGate resource use depends on concurrent browser sessions, open result sets, query size, imports, exports, schema comparisons, active drivers, and the number of stored connections. The catalogue records PostgreSQL and MariaDB as Not required because DbGate is a client; target databases and their resources remain separate.
On AvaHost, DbGate uses Plan 1 at €2. The hosted DbGate package includes one-click deployment, a custom domain with automated HTTPS, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. The hosted package protects DbGate with a generated administrator password and persists its configuration. It does not include a target database, database backups, network peering, privileged accounts, driver licences, or recovery for external systems. Customers provide reachable endpoints and least-privilege credentials and remain responsible for every executed statement.

The interface is lightweight for modest use, but large query results, concurrent sessions, imports, exports, schema comparisons, and active drivers can increase memory and processing. Target database size does not consume DbGate storage unless data is exported or retained in its own persistent workspace.
No target database is bundled. The catalogue marks the relational-database requirement as Not required because DbGate is a client for systems you provide. Supply a reachable database endpoint, a supported driver, and least-privilege credentials. Database capacity, uptime, backups, logs, and recovery remain the responsibility of that external database service.
The AvaHost template creates an administrator login with a generated password, and a custom domain can use automated HTTPS. DbGate can retain connection definitions on its persistent volume, so protect the administrator account, rotate database credentials when needed, limit target-side permissions, and avoid storing broad production access in a shared installation.
AvaHost updates the DbGate application and backs up its hosted configuration on a schedule. Those services do not back up or roll back external databases. Before migrations, imports, edits, or destructive queries, use the database provider’s own backup and recovery process and verify the exact scope of the account being used.
