How ConvertX works
ConvertX accepts one or more uploaded files, identifies available conversion paths, and passes each job to the appropriate underlying converter. The project combines many specialist tools for documents, media, images, ebooks, archives, subtitles, data formats, and technical assets behind a consistent browser workflow.
Users choose an output format and retrieve the completed result after processing. Multiple accounts and password protection can restrict access, while multi-file handling helps users convert related inputs in one session. Output quality and supported options still depend on the converter responsible for that file type.
Key ConvertX features
The upstream project advertises support for more than one thousand formats by integrating tools such as FFmpeg, ImageMagick, LibreOffice, Pandoc, Calibre, and other format-specific utilities. This breadth is useful, but the same input can produce different fidelity, metadata, font, codec, or layout results depending on the original format and chosen output.
Conversion work can be CPU-, memory-, and storage-intensive. Large media, office documents with complex layout, archives containing many files, and several simultaneous jobs create more demand than a few small images. Users should also remove sensitive source and result files when they are no longer required and test critical conversions before relying on them.
ConvertX vs CloudConvert
ConvertX offers a self-hosted browser application backed by a large set of local conversion tools. CloudConvert is a provider-operated service and developer API supporting more than two hundred formats, with managed job infrastructure, integrations, security controls, and scaling handled by the vendor.
CloudConvert may be preferable for developers who want an API service without administering converters and are comfortable sending files to that provider. ConvertX is attractive when an organisation wants the conversion application on its own hosted instance and accepts responsibility for capacity, format testing, access controls, temporary files, and updates.
Who uses ConvertX
Creative teams use ConvertX to resize or reformat images, operations staff convert office documents and archives, and developers transform data or technical assets during testing. Educators and small organisations can provide one controlled conversion portal instead of directing users to many unrelated websites.
ConvertX does not promise identical output across every format pair, nor does it replace specialist editing software. Encrypted files, uncommon codecs, damaged inputs, unsupported fonts, or converter limitations may produce errors or imperfect results. Important files should be retained in their original form.
Self-hosting ConvertX: requirements and cost
Resource use follows input size, output size, converter type, queue length, simultaneous jobs, temporary work files, account activity, and retained results. The catalogue records PostgreSQL and MariaDB as Not required; application configuration, account data, and conversion files still require coordinated persistence and cleanup.
On AvaHost, ConvertX uses Plan 1 at €2. The hosted ConvertX package includes one-click deployment, a custom domain with automated HTTPS, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. The plan includes the conversion application, not third-party storage, proprietary codecs, commercial fonts, or specialist editing licences. Users remain responsible for uploaded content, output verification, and removing confidential files that no longer need to remain on the service.

A custom hostname can serve ConvertX through automated HTTPS after DNS points to AvaHost. Restrict the address to intended users, confirm account and password settings, and test upload plus download paths after the domain is attached. Update any internal links or browser policies that reference the original application hostname.
No single converter can promise identical results for every format pair. Fonts, embedded media, codecs, page layout, metadata, encryption, and unsupported features can change or fail during conversion. Keep the original file, test representative documents, and review the generated output before using it for publication, compliance, or long-term records.
The hosted application processes files on the ConvertX instance, but users still control what they upload and how long results remain. Remove confidential inputs and outputs when they are no longer needed, limit access to authorised accounts, and avoid treating scheduled hosting backups as a substitute for a documented data-retention and deletion policy.
