How Shiori works

Shiori adds, edits, deletes, and searches bookmarks through a web interface, while its underlying application also supports command-oriented workflows. When possible, it parses readable page content and creates an offline archive with related thumbnails and excerpts. Search can match URLs, titles, excerpts, cached content, and tags, helping a saved collection remain useful after the original browser tab is gone.

Netscape-format import and export provide a common migration path, and Pocket exports can be imported into the collection. An archived page is only a captured representation of what Shiori retrieved at that time; scripts, logins, video, interactive widgets, and protected assets may not work offline. The original source address should remain part of any research or attribution workflow.

The catalogue persists /shiori, which holds the local database, thumbnails, and archive data. It also exposes the upstream default owner credentials, shiori / gopher. Those credentials are widely documented and must be changed immediately after the first login, before bookmarks or private captures are added.

Shiori is more direct when the goal is a compact self-hosted collection and portable bookmark export. Its interface and extension ecosystem are narrower, and archived pages still depend on what the source allowed the server to retrieve.

Who uses Shiori

Researchers preserve readable copies of useful pages, developers keep technical references searchable by tag, and individuals migrate browser or Pocket exports into a private collection. A trusted household or team can also use one installation when everyone understands that the service is not documented as a strict tenant-isolation platform.

Shiori is not a legal web archive, subscription bypass, content-rights service, or replacement for the original publisher. Default credentials, archived sensitive pages, and imported browser histories can create substantial privacy exposure if the server address or account is shared carelessly.

Self-hosting Shiori: requirements and cost

Shiori resource use grows with bookmark count, archived page size, thumbnails, extracted text, imports, search activity, users, and simultaneous capture jobs. PostgreSQL and MariaDB are Not required in the catalogue template; the hosted stack persists the Shiori application directory. Large offline archives and image-heavy pages usually affect storage more than a simple link-only collection.

  • Shiori starts at €2 on Plan 1. That plan suits a moderate bookmark collection with ordinary search and occasional page archiving. Bookmark count, cached page size, thumbnails, extracted text, imports, active users, and simultaneous archive jobs are the main signals for reviewing storage and processing capacity later.

  • The catalogue exposes Shiori’s upstream default owner login: username `shiori` and password `gopher`. Sign in through the final HTTPS address and replace the password immediately, before adding private bookmarks or archived pages. These defaults are public knowledge, so leaving them in place gives anyone who reaches the login page a practical route to full access.

  • A custom domain can point to the Shiori web interface, with automated HTTPS protecting login and bookmark traffic. Update any browser integration after DNS is active.
