How SerpBear works
SerpBear groups keywords under domains and records where each domain appears in Google results for a selected country and device. The application stores position history, supports configurable scraping strategies, exposes an API, and exports keyword information to CSV. Optional Google Search Console and Google Ads integrations can add visits, impressions, search volume, and keyword research data when the relevant accounts are connected.
Rank retrieval is not performed by the hosted server alone. Upstream setup requires a third-party scraping API account or suitable proxy addresses because direct repeated requests to Google can be blocked. Provider quotas, proxy quality, country targeting, search-result changes, and keyword count all influence how complete and timely the data becomes.
Key SerpBear features
The catalogue creates an admin username, generated web password, generated application secret, and a separate API key intended for the browser extension. The API key is not the web-login password. The package persists /app/data, where the SQLite data and application state are stored. Administrators should label each credential clearly and revoke exposed scraper or Google integration tokens at the provider.
SerpBear can send position-change notifications when SMTP is configured upstream, but application email is disabled on the hosted service. SerpBear is attractive when a focused tracker and ownership of stored ranking history matter. It still depends on external retrieval providers, and those provider costs or quotas are separate from hosting.
Who uses SerpBear
Independent site owners watch priority terms, agencies separate keywords by client domain, and content teams measure whether a page moves after publication or optimisation. API and CSV access help transfer observations into reporting workflows. Google integrations can add context, but teams should distinguish sampled search-console performance from scraped result positions.
SerpBear is not a search-console replacement, an automatic optimisation service, or a guarantee that two users see the same Google result. Personalisation, location, device, result features, and retrieval timing can change observed positions. Tracking large keyword sets also needs a deliberate scraper strategy and enough provider capacity.
Self-hosting SerpBear: requirements and cost
SerpBear resource use grows with domains, keywords, scrape depth, history retention, scheduled checks, API calls, exports, integrations, and simultaneous users. PostgreSQL and MariaDB are Not required in the catalogue template; the application uses SQLite in its persistent data directory. The dominant external constraint is often scraper or proxy capacity rather than local storage, especially when many result pages are checked.
On AvaHost, SerpBear uses Plan 1 at €2. The hosted SerpBear package includes one-click deployment, a custom domain with automated HTTPS, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. The package supplies web credentials and the browser-extension API key, but no scraper account, proxy addresses, Google Search Console property, Google Ads account, or email delivery.
