How Readeck works

Readeck accepts a page URL through its web interface or companion browser extension, retrieves the page, and builds a saved reading copy. The reader view removes much of the surrounding website chrome so the title, text, images, reading progress, and source address remain easier to review later. Saving an item does not transfer copyright or subscription rights, and the quality of a capture still depends on the source page.

Labels provide manual organisation, while collections store search conditions that can surface matching bookmarks dynamically. Full-text search, favourites, archive states, highlights, highlight notes, and reading progress support a workflow that moves from capture to review. Readeck can also print or export supported material, but exported results depend on what the application successfully saved from the original page.

Key Readeck features

The browser extension can send the full rendered page to Readeck, which is useful for sites whose content appears only after client-side loading. The extension is a separate browser component and is not installed by the hosted plan. Users should review extension permissions, sign in to the correct server, and avoid saving material they are not authorised to retain.

Readeck stores its archive and index in the persistent application directory. Saved images, extracted text, highlight data, labels, notes, and export jobs can make a long-running reading library larger than the original list of URLs suggests. Search remains most useful when labels and collection rules are maintained consistently rather than treated as an afterthought.

Readeck vs Instapaper

Readeck focuses on a self-hosted web archive with labels, collections, search, highlights, and export options. Instapaper is a maintained hosted read-later service with official mobile applications, browser saving tools, folders, highlighting, and listening features. The products overlap around distraction-reduced reading while differing in hosting, client, and account models.

Instapaper may fit readers who prefer a provider-operated account and polished native clients without administering a server. Readeck is attractive when control of the stored archive and the server address matters more than a commercial mobile ecosystem. Neither product can promise a perfect copy of every dynamic, authenticated, paywalled, or protected source page.

Who uses Readeck

Researchers collect sources for a project, writers highlight quotations and add notes, and professionals maintain a private queue of reports or technical articles. Collections can surface items by label, status, date, or other indexed properties, making the archive useful for recurring reading reviews rather than one large unsorted list.

Readeck is not a subscription bypass, web crawler for bulk republication, legal records archive, or replacement for the original publisher. Important source material should be retained only with appropriate rights, and users should keep separate copies of information whose availability is governed by an external account or website.

Self-hosting Readeck: requirements and cost

Readeck resource use grows with saved-page count, extracted text, archived images, highlights, notes, search indexes, exports, active readers, and capture frequency. PostgreSQL and MariaDB are Not required in the catalogue template; the application uses its own persistent data directory. A small reading queue is light, while image-heavy archives and frequent full-page captures can increase storage and indexing work.

On AvaHost, Readeck uses Plan 1 at €2. The hosted Readeck package includes one-click deployment, a custom domain with automated HTTPS, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. The browser extension, publisher subscriptions, source-site credentials, native reading clients, content licences, and capture rights are not included. Some sites can block retrieval or produce incomplete archives, so verify important pages after saving and retain authorised originals separately.

F.A.Q

  • Readeck starts at €2 on Plan 1. That plan suits a modest reading archive with ordinary search and occasional captures. Saved-page count, extracted text, archived images, highlights, notes, exports, concurrent readers, and capture frequency are the main indicators for deciding whether the installation needs more storage or processing room.

  • A custom domain can point to Readeck, and automated HTTPS protects browser sessions and extension requests to that address. Configure the companion extension with the final server URL after DNS is active. The certificate protects transport, while account credentials, browser permissions, source subscriptions, and the complete saved archive still require careful user control.

  • Capture success depends on the source website. Dynamic rendering, paywalls, authentication, anti-automation measures, removed pages, unusual markup, and media restrictions can produce partial or failed saves. The separate browser extension can send rendered content for some cases, but users should inspect important results and keep authorised originals outside the reading archive.

  • AvaHost applies Readeck updates automatically and includes scheduled backups for persistent application data. After a substantial release, test login, URL capture, extension requests, reader formatting, search, labels, collections, highlights, notes, progress, and exports. Verify several older saved pages as well as a new capture before relying on the updated workflow.
