How Plausible works

Plausible adds a compact tracking script to a website and sends pageview or event data to the hosted analytics instance. The dashboard presents visitors, views, sources, pages, countries, devices, campaigns, and configured goals without requiring the operator to build a report for routine questions. Several sites can be measured from one installation with access governed by its accounts.

Community Edition uses PostgreSQL for account and configuration data and ClickHouse for event records. This split supports analytical queries but makes the deployment a multi-service system rather than one web container. Site traffic, retained events, custom properties, dashboard queries, and the number of measured properties are the main capacity factors.

Key Plausible features

The interface focuses on a concise set of website metrics and lets operators drill into sources, pages, locations, devices, campaigns, and goals. Custom events can record actions such as downloads, registrations, or purchases when the site implements them. Shared links or account access can expose selected dashboards to colleagues or customers.

Plausible is designed for measurement without cookies in its standard configuration and limits the data it collects, but a software choice does not settle every privacy obligation. Consent, disclosure, retention, and lawful-use requirements depend on the site’s implementation, configured events, integrations, and applicable jurisdiction. The customer remains responsible for that assessment.

Plausible vs Google Analytics

Plausible Community Edition is a self-hosted analytics application with a deliberately focused dashboard and a privacy-oriented collection model. Google Analytics is a vendor-operated measurement platform with broader reporting, audience, predictive, advertising, attribution, and Google product integrations.

Google Analytics may suit teams that depend on advanced advertising workflows and a large managed measurement ecosystem. Plausible is more attractive when straightforward site analytics and infrastructure control take priority, but operators must size PostgreSQL and ClickHouse, maintain the tracker configuration, and decide what data collection is appropriate.

Who uses Plausible

Publishers use Plausible to understand readership and referral sources, while product teams measure landing pages, campaigns, and selected conversion events. Agencies can host several customer properties in one controlled environment when account permissions and privacy responsibilities are documented.

The application does not replace product experimentation, data warehousing, or a full marketing attribution platform. A dashboard can describe recorded activity, but it cannot explain every cause or repair poor event design. Teams should define a small set of meaningful goals before sending large volumes of custom data.

Self-hosting Plausible: requirements and cost

Demand is driven by pageviews, custom events, retention, measured sites, concurrent dashboards, imports, and query complexity. PostgreSQL stores accounts and settings, while ClickHouse stores analytics events. PostgreSQL is included but unmanaged, and the complete stack already maps to the highest public app-page plan after the database adjustment.

Plausible Community Edition runs on Plan 4 at €20 through AvaHost. The Plausible package combines one-click provisioning, custom-domain HTTPS, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. Application email is disabled, so scheduled email reports, invitations, and email-based recovery are unavailable; share dashboards directly and retain administrator credentials outside the application.
