How OpenVPN Access Server works

OpenVPN Access Server runs as a hosted application that exposes its primary interface or network service through a persistent deployment. Configuration and application data remain attached to the instance, while users connect through the web interface, API, or native clients appropriate to the software. The service model is intentionally separated from unrelated external subscriptions and providers.

Access Server provides Admin and Client Web UIs and supports local or external authentication. OpenVPN software licensing is separate from AvaHost infrastructure charges.

Key OpenVPN Access Server features

The hosted package focuses on the core upstream application rather than bundling unrelated commercial services. A stable public endpoint is needed for reliable VPN client profiles and tunnel access. Administrators remain responsible for application-level settings, connected third-party accounts, content, users, and any external services configured inside the software.

Automatic application updates and scheduled backups are included as AvaHost platform functions. Those platform functions do not remove the need to review upstream release notes, test important workflows after major changes, and retain application-specific recovery information when the project recommends it.

OpenVPN Access Server vs Tailscale

1

OpenVPN Access Server

OpenVPN Access Server is aimed at operators who want direct control of the hosted application and its configuration. Tailscale may be preferable when the priority is a vendor-managed ecosystem, bundled account service, or a different administration model rather than self-hosting.

2

Tailscale

The comparison is functional rather than a claim that the products are identical. Feature scope, provider integrations, pricing, limits, and support models can differ, so teams should choose according to the workflows they actually need.

Who uses OpenVPN Access Server

OpenVPN Access Server fits individuals, technical teams, and organisations that want to run the software under their own hosted account instead of depending only on a vendor-hosted instance. It is particularly useful where domain control, data location, application configuration, or integration flexibility matters.

A dedicated public IP address is required for this AvaHost deployment; OpenVPN subscription costs, when needed, remain separate.

Self-hosting OpenVPN Access Server: requirements and cost

Resource use depends on active users, background jobs, integrations, stored data, and the workload performed by the application. The hosted baseline uses Not required. A separate PostgreSQL or MariaDB container is Not required for this hosted baseline.

On AvaHost, the recommended minimum is Plan 1 at €2. The package includes one-click deployment, a custom domain or hostname where applicable, automated HTTPS for web interfaces, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. This application requires a dedicated public IP address on AvaHost so network clients can reach a stable endpoint. Application email is disabled across hosted apps unless a separate supported external mail path is configured.

F.A.Q

  • OpenVPN Access Server starts at €2 on Plan 1. The recommendation covers the hosted application baseline and normal persistent data, but external subscriptions, API usage, provider accounts, licences, or third-party services remain separate when the software needs them. Resource-heavy workloads, large datasets, or many concurrent users can justify moving to a larger plan.

  • A custom domain or hostname can be connected to OpenVPN Access Server, with automated HTTPS protecting browser-based interfaces after DNS is pointed to the hosted application. Services that use their own network protocols may also require separate ports or client configuration. DNS ownership, application-level access rules, and third-party identity settings remain under the administrator’s control.

  • AvaHost applies application updates automatically and keeps the persistent OpenVPN Access Server data attached to the deployment, with scheduled backups included. Administrators should still review upstream release notes before major changes, preserve application-specific recovery information, and verify authentication, integrations, data access, and critical workflows after a significant update.

  • Yes. OpenVPN Access Server requires a dedicated public IP address on this AvaHost package because clients need a stable network endpoint for the service. The dedicated address does not replace application security: administrators still need to configure authentication, firewall policy, client access, routing or DNS restrictions, and recovery access appropriate to the software.
