How Memos works
Memos presents entries in a timeline, allowing users to write Markdown, add tags, attach files, include links, and search previous thoughts. Notes can function as personal logs, task reminders, meeting snippets, research fragments, or short references. The chronological model favours frequent capture and later retrieval rather than a rigid folder hierarchy.
Visibility controls distinguish private, protected, and public content. Share links can expose selected material to anyone holding the link, so they should be treated as bearer access rather than proof of recipient identity. The first user created on a new instance becomes the host administrator and controls registration and workspace settings.
Key Memos features
Tags and search help reconnect notes that were written at different times, while the timeline makes recent activity easy to scan. Public and protected visibility can support lightweight publishing, but users must understand the audience before changing a memo from private. Attachments may contain more sensitive information than the visible text suggests.
The catalogue persists /var/opt/memos. Application email is disabled, so email-based notifications and recovery workflows are unavailable. External identity providers, moderation teams, content review, long-form publishing tools, and document-governance controls are not bundled with the hosted application.
Who uses Memos
Individuals keep work journals, reading notes, code snippets, and personal reminders. Small teams can share short updates or internal references, while creators publish selected public notes without maintaining a traditional blog for every brief thought.
Memos is not a formal records-management system, encrypted secret vault, project tracker, or substitute for a structured knowledge base when approvals, document versions, and complex permissions are required. Public or shared notes should be reviewed for confidential information before release.
Self-hosting Memos: requirements and cost
Memos resource use grows with users, memo count, attachments, search, tags, public traffic, and API activity. Memos retains its records in the mounted application directory; the catalogue adds neither PostgreSQL nor MariaDB. Text notes are light, while attachments and a long retained timeline contribute most of the storage growth.
On AvaHost, Memos uses Plan 1 at €2. The hosted Memos package includes one-click deployment, a custom domain with automated HTTPS, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. The first registered user becomes the host administrator, so initialise the installation with a trusted account. Application email is disabled, making mail-based recovery and notifications unavailable. External identity providers, content moderation, secret management, formal retention, and recipient verification for share links are not included. Review visibility before publishing or sharing sensitive notes.
F.A.Q
Memos starts at €2 on Plan 1. Text-focused personal use fits the entry plan comfortably. User count, memo volume, attachments, search activity, public traffic, tags, and API integrations are the main factors to review, with uploaded files usually contributing more storage growth than Markdown notes.
The first account created on a fresh Memos installation becomes the host administrator. Initialise the service with a trusted user, store that credential securely, and review registration and workspace settings before sharing the address. AvaHost does not create or verify end-user identities for you, and application email cannot provide a recovery fallback.
A share link should be treated as bearer access: anyone who obtains the link may be able to open the shared content according to its visibility rules. It does not verify the intended recipient’s identity. Avoid sharing secrets, review attachments as well as text, and revoke or change visibility when access is no longer appropriate.
Memos can run on a custom domain with automated HTTPS once DNS points to the hosted application. The secure connection protects browser traffic, while note visibility, account access, share links, and attachments still require deliberate control. AvaHost applies application updates automatically and includes scheduled backups for the persistent Memos data directory.
