How LibreChat works

LibreChat is the user interface between people and configured AI providers. Administrators connect supported endpoints or provider accounts, expose selected models, and govern registration and access. Users then create conversations, attach supported files, work with assistants or tools, and switch providers from one browser workspace instead of maintaining a separate interface for each service.

The catalogue stack includes MongoDB for application state, conversation records, and configuration. This internal database is packaged with LibreChat, but it does not trigger the PostgreSQL or MariaDB plan adjustment used elsewhere in the project. Provider responses, latency, token limits, and usage charges remain determined by the remote service or endpoint chosen by the administrator.

Key LibreChat features

A multi-provider interface lets users compare or select models from one account. Conversation history, presets, assistants, file workflows, web search, code-related integrations, and tool connections can extend the experience when each dependency is configured. Not every menu option works without an external service, API key, or compatible endpoint.

Credentials and uploaded content require careful governance. An administrator should decide which providers may receive prompts, whether a tool can access external systems, and what information users are permitted to submit. The hosting plan controls the interface; it does not change the privacy terms, retention policy, or billing model of a connected AI provider.

Who uses LibreChat

Development teams use LibreChat to compare approved model providers and centralise shared access rules. Small organisations can offer staff one browser workspace while keeping provider configuration under an administrator, and researchers can separate the conversational interface from the infrastructure that performs inference.

LibreChat is not an AI model and should not be sold as one. It cannot answer without a configured remote provider or endpoint. Teams also need their own process for API-key ownership, spending controls, acceptable use, and reviewing data before it leaves the hosted interface.

Self-hosting LibreChat: requirements and cost

Interface resource use is shaped by active users, stored conversations, attachments, tool activity, logs, and the internal MongoDB service. Actual inference runs elsewhere and may create separate provider costs. The plan mapping treats PostgreSQL or MariaDB as “Not required” for LibreChat, so there is no relational-database step-up.

AvaHost recommends Plan 2 at €5 for the hosted interface. LibreChat hosting supplies one-click setup, a custom HTTPS endpoint, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. No AI model, API allowance, inference hardware, or paid provider subscription is included. Application email is disabled, so verification messages and email-based password recovery are unavailable; configure accounts without relying on those workflows.

F.A.Q

  • LibreChat starts at €5 on Plan 2 for the interface and its internal MongoDB service. The amount does not include model access, API calls, provider subscriptions, or inference hardware. Active users, conversation history, files, tools, logs, and browser activity shape the resources used by the hosted application.

  • No AI model, token allowance, provider subscription, or inference hardware is bundled with the LibreChat plan. Administrators must connect approved remote providers or compatible endpoints and supply the necessary credentials. Provider pricing, rate limits, data handling, model availability, and response performance remain separate from the AvaHost application service.

  • A custom hostname can serve LibreChat with automated HTTPS once its DNS records point to AvaHost. Provider endpoints remain separate and may have their own callback or origin requirements. After changing the application address, test registration, sign-in, provider connections, file workflows, tools, and any integration that saved the previous URL.

  • Application email is disabled, so LibreChat cannot deliver verification messages or email-based password recovery from this configuration. Email-and-password login can still be used for accounts that already have valid credentials. Administrators should control registration, retain owner access securely, and avoid promising a recovery path that depends on an outbound mail service.
