Karakeep accepts web links, text notes, images, and documents, then fetches useful context such as titles, descriptions, and preview imagery. Saved items can be placed in lists, tagged, highlighted, and searched later. The catalogue deployment also runs a browser service for page capture and Meilisearch for indexing, so a bookmark can become a preserved research record rather than a bare URL.
Full-page archival helps retain a readable copy when the source changes or disappears. OCR can extract text from images, and browser or mobile clients can send material into the same collection. Optional AI-assisted tagging and summarisation exist upstream, but those functions require a separately configured compatible provider and are not included with the hosting plan.
