How Huginn works

Huginn represents automation as agents that create and consume structured events. One agent can fetch a feed or website, another can filter or reshape the event, and a later agent can call a webhook or perform another supported action. Scenarios group related agents, schedules determine when they run, and event history helps users inspect the data moving through a workflow.

Agents often connect to external websites, APIs, accounts, and credentials. Those services must permit automated access and may change behaviour, authentication, rate limits, or output formats. A workflow that works today can require maintenance when an upstream page changes or a provider rotates an API policy, so important scenarios need monitoring and test events.

Key Huginn features

The catalogue uses the all-in-one Huginn image and persists /var/lib/mysql, where the bundled database keeps agents, users, scenarios, events, and configuration. The catalogue’s relational-database field remains Not required because no separate PostgreSQL or MariaDB service is provisioned. The application and bundled database still need to be backed up and recovered together.

Huginn seeds the fixed first-run credentials admin / password, which must be replaced immediately. Application email is disabled, so email-delivery agents and account messages cannot send from this hosted service. Web requests and integrations may still work when the customer supplies permitted endpoints and credentials, but the hosting service does not provide those third-party accounts.

Huginn vs Zapier

Huginn gives technical users a graph of self-hosted agents whose configuration, event data, maintenance, and uptime stay with the operator. Zapier is a provider-managed automation platform that connects a large catalogue of applications through Zaps, webhooks, tables, forms, and other commercial workflow tools governed by account and task allowances.

Zapier may suit teams that want maintained connectors, vendor support, a broad app ecosystem, and less responsibility for changing APIs. Huginn fits users who are comfortable configuring agents, reading event payloads, maintaining integrations, and accepting that third-party sites can alter the workflows they depend on.

Who uses Huginn

Researchers monitor feeds and pages, operations teams watch service signals, developers route webhooks, and analysts collect data from permitted sources. Huginn is useful when a workflow is event-oriented and the team wants visibility into each transformation rather than a closed provider recipe.

It is not a substitute for consent, API licences, rate-limit planning, secrets management, or human review of consequential actions. Scraping and automation must respect source terms, privacy obligations, and the legal rights attached to collected data.

Self-hosting Huginn: requirements and cost

Huginn consumption grows with agent count, schedule frequency, event volume, retained history, website parsing, webhook traffic, concurrent jobs, and external response size. The catalogue records a separate relational database as Not required, while its persistent volume contains the bundled database. Plan 2 provides the mapped application capacity for this all-in-one workload.

On AvaHost, Huginn uses Plan 2 at €5. The hosted Huginn package includes one-click deployment, a custom domain with automated HTTPS, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. External API accounts, web services, credentials, proxy services, and delivery providers are not bundled. Application email is disabled, so email agents and account messages cannot send. Replace the fixed upstream administrator password, use least-privilege credentials, and test scenarios with low-impact events before enabling consequential actions.

AvaHost does not manage that database independently. Treat users, agents, scenarios, events, configuration, and the bundled database as one system when planning updates, backups, or recovery.

  • Application email is disabled across AvaHost hosted services, so Huginn agents that depend on outbound email cannot send from this deployment. Use a supported non-email action where suitable, or redesign the workflow around a permitted external endpoint. Third-party accounts, API credentials, and delivery services are not supplied with the hosting plan.

  • AvaHost applies application updates automatically and includes scheduled backups for the persistent installation. After a substantial release, verify the administrator login, agent schedules, recent events, scenario links, webhook endpoints, credentials, and several low-impact test runs. External sites and APIs can change independently, so a failed scenario does not necessarily indicate a hosting problem.
