How HomeBox works
HomeBox organises items into locations and can attach labels, descriptive details, purchase information, warranty dates, maintenance records, notes, photographs, and documents. Search and filters help locate an object without browsing every room or container, while reports and exports support insurance preparation, moves, audits, and household planning.
Each record is only as reliable as the information entered. The application can hold proof-of-purchase files and serial numbers, but it does not inspect rooms, verify ownership, appraise market value, or confirm whether a warranty is valid. Users should photograph important items clearly, keep source documents where legally required, and update locations after moves or disposals.
Key HomeBox features
The catalogue enables account registration in the HomeBox environment. That can simplify onboarding for a trusted household, but an exposed registration page may allow unwanted accounts if access is not reviewed. Administrators should confirm who has joined, remove unknown users, and restrict public promotion of the address until the intended account model is understood.
Current HomeBox releases support email-assisted functions only when an SMTP service is configured. Platform application email is disabled, so password-reset messages and other outbound email workflows are unavailable. Inventory records can contain sensitive photographs, receipts, serial numbers, addresses, and valuations, making account security and visibility decisions especially important.
Who uses HomeBox
Families use HomeBox for insurance-ready inventories, collectors track items across shelves and storage units, and landlords document appliances or furnishings assigned to properties. Small offices can catalogue equipment, purchase records, warranties, and maintenance without adopting a larger asset-management system.
HomeBox is not an insurer, valuation service, legal evidence store, barcode-scanning service, or physical asset tracker. Important documents should remain available outside the application, and recovery access must not depend on email because hosted application email is disabled.
Self-hosting HomeBox: requirements and cost
HomeBox resource use grows with item count, users, uploaded photographs, documents, search activity, reports, and maintenance history. HomeBox uses its persistent application directory without a provisioned PostgreSQL or MariaDB service. For most households, storage occupied by attachments and images will grow faster than processor demand.
On AvaHost, HomeBox uses Plan 1 at €2. The hosted HomeBox package includes one-click deployment, a custom domain with automated HTTPS, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. The catalogue enables registration, so review created accounts and remove access that is not expected. Application email is disabled, including mail-based password recovery. Appraisals, insurance validation, barcode hardware, physical tracking, and external document custody are not included. Retain administrator credentials and independent copies of essential receipts, serial numbers, and photographs.
F.A.Q
HomeBox starts at €2 on Plan 1. That plan suits a modest household or office inventory with ordinary searches and light document storage. Item count, user accounts, uploaded photographs, receipts, warranty files, reports, and maintenance history determine when the installation may need more storage or processing room.
HomeBox can run on a custom domain with automated HTTPS after the domain’s DNS points to the hosted application. Use the final address only with trusted account holders. The catalogue enables registration, so administrators should review new users, remove unexpected accounts, and avoid publishing the URL broadly until access behaviour is confirmed.
Application email is disabled across AvaHost hosted services, so HomeBox cannot send password-reset or other outbound messages from this installation. Keep administrator credentials in a secure password manager and maintain more than one authorised administrator where the application permits it. SMTP service, inbox management, and email delivery are not included with the app plan.
AvaHost applies application updates automatically and includes scheduled backups for the persistent HomeBox data. Treat item records, locations, labels, photos, documents, warranties, and maintenance history as one recovery set. Keep independent copies of irreplaceable receipts and evidence, then test login, search, attachments, reports, and account permissions after a substantial release.
