How Heimdall works
Heimdall organises applications as tiles with names, icons, colours, descriptions, and destination URLs. Users open the dashboard, search or browse the configured entries, and follow a tile to the underlying service. The application includes a growing catalogue of recognised application types, while generic entries can represent other web addresses.
Upstream distinguishes Foundation apps, which primarily provide recognised icons and labels, from Enhanced apps that can connect to a service API and display extra information. Enhanced integration requires a reachable service, compatible version, and any necessary URL or credentials. Heimdall does not install, manage, authenticate, or monitor the applications linked from its tiles.
Key Heimdall features
The catalogue persists Heimdall configuration under /config. Its first-run note states that no password is set, and instructs the operator to enable authentication in Settings before placing private material on the dashboard. Until that is completed, anyone reaching the address may see its tiles and any non-secret information displayed by enhanced apps.
Adding a dashboard credential does not secure the destination services themselves. Each linked application needs its own authentication and permission model, and any API credential used for enhanced data should be restricted to the minimum scope. Operators should avoid exposing internal hostnames, administrative links, or sensitive status information to an unintended audience.
Who uses Heimdall
Homelab operators group media, storage, network, and automation interfaces; families maintain a shared launch page; and small teams publish a menu for approved internal tools. Searchable tiles can make a growing service collection easier to navigate.
Heimdall is not a single sign-on system, password manager, service monitor, asset inventory, access approval tool, or security gateway. It organises destinations and optionally displays selected data, while identity, uptime, authorisation, maintenance, and recovery remain responsibilities of the linked systems.
Self-hosting Heimdall: requirements and cost
Heimdall resource use is driven by dashboard visitors, tile count, images, searches, and enhanced-app calls to external services. PostgreSQL and MariaDB are Not required in the catalogue, and /config stores persistent application settings. The software has no separate application fee, while frequent enhanced refreshes and many users can generate more outbound requests than a simple link-only page.
On AvaHost, Heimdall uses Plan 1 at €2. The hosted Heimdall package includes one-click deployment, a custom domain with automated HTTPS, automatic application updates, and scheduled backups. The hosted package persists configuration but starts without a password. Operators must enable authentication before publishing private links or status data. The package does not include linked applications, their user accounts, enhanced-app API credentials, single sign-on, monitoring, or access governance.

Heimdall starts at €2 on Plan 1. That starting plan suits a modest collection of links and light dashboard use. Tile count, concurrent viewers, image assets, searches, and enhanced-app refreshes influence resource demand. The linked services, their accounts, API credentials, and their own hosting are separate from the Heimdall price.
A custom domain can point to Heimdall, and automated HTTPS is applied after the required DNS record is configured. Update saved dashboard links and any enhanced-app callbacks that depend on the old hostname. Test tile destinations, search, authentication, icons, and external service data before distributing the final URL to users.
No password is configured by the catalogue at first run. The deployment note directs the operator to open Settings and enable authentication before putting private links or information on the dashboard. Complete that step promptly, choose a strong unique credential, and remember that Heimdall authentication does not replace login controls on the applications behind each tile.
Enhanced apps can display information from supported services, but customers must supply the destination URL, network route, compatible service, and any API credential. AvaHost does not create those integrations or linked applications. Scheduled backups protect Heimdall configuration, while external API changes, expired keys, unavailable services, or excessive permissions remain outside the package.
