Focalboard organises work around boards containing cards. Cards can represent tasks, ideas, requests, or milestones, while properties add dates, people, status values, priorities, and other structured details. Different views let a team inspect the same records as a kanban board, table, gallery, or calendar instead of rebuilding the project for each reporting need.

Filters, sorting, grouping, comments, checklists, and card descriptions help a small group move from an overview into the detail behind a task. The standalone server keeps workspace data in its persistent data path. The catalogue leaves registration open until the first account is created, so the operator must claim the workspace before sharing its address.

Key Focalboard features

Focalboard is most useful when a board has a clear owner, a limited set of statuses, and agreed rules for archived or completed cards. Attachments and comments add context, but the application is not a document repository, service desk, source-control platform, or formal records system. The upstream community repository states that the standalone project is not currently maintained. That status is a material operating consideration: automatic container updates can apply images that are published, but hosting cannot create security fixes, compatibility work, or new features that upstream has not released. Organisations should assess whether the present feature set and maintenance position are acceptable before relying on it for important workflows.

Focalboard vs Trello

Focalboard and Trello both present work through boards, lists, cards, members, and structured card details. Focalboard keeps the standalone workspace on infrastructure selected by the operator. Trello is a managed collaboration product with provider accounts, browser and mobile clients, templates, Power-Ups, and automation that connects boards to a wider service ecosystem.

Trello may suit teams that value maintained native apps, managed identity and synchronisation, a large integration catalogue, and commercial workspace features. Focalboard can fit a smaller group that wants a self-hosted visual board and needs only the functions already available. The comparison does not remove the need to evaluate Focalboard’s stated maintenance status.

Who uses Focalboard

Product groups can use Focalboard for feature queues, operations teams can organise recurring work, and small agencies can keep a client delivery board separate from public tools. Personal users may also create planning boards for study, home projects, or content schedules.

Focalboard is a poor fit for regulated approval chains, high-volume support queues, portfolio accounting, or workflows that require an actively maintained vendor roadmap. Administrators remain responsible for the first registration, membership, board permissions, exports, and any migration plan should the project or container image stop meeting their needs.

PostgreSQL and MariaDB are Not required by the catalogue template; application state is kept in the persistent /data volume.
